“Compulsion” to me is the real Curse of Capitalism. It all started with a mere ripple in the fabric of society, when morality like helping thy neighbor was replaced with competing a neighbor. Sound insignificant? But that’s how chaos works, where a single flap of butterfly wings can ignite a category 5 storm. To further strengthen their case, the capitalist society manifested many more commandments like:
Thou shall not help others.
Thou shall have killer instinct.
Money can buy anything.
It's all fair in love and war.
.......
So, we transformed from good Samaritans to Smart goods salesmen. It was all hunky-dory in the start, but gradually we started feeling the impact. Early symptoms were just occasional panic attacks, easily ignorable. Then the virus mutated and took the form of deadly “Compulsive behavior”. The very industrial revolution that brought us out of slavery took us back to the same, where the best part is that “Masters” won't have to use whipping anymore, as we worked willingly through Competitive Compulsion.
Love, which used to be a form of affectation, has now become nothing but a compulsion that is required to fill the gaping invisible void inside. Youth have suffered the most, especially during the later part of the 20th century. The world started to see disorders and obsessions that could have brought Freud himself to the brink of insanity.
As a species, from Outside we consider ourselves to be at the pinnacle, with our high intellect, discoveries, and inventions. But from Inside, we are in chaos, it's all breaking apart and going down an abyss. We feared a nuclear apocalypse but should be worried more about the implosions happening everywhere inside everyone. We are passing on genes, burdened with these compulsive behaviors that will only mutate and eventually lead to a zombie society of mechanical beings feeding on each other miseries.
Let's stop for a while, take a deep breath, look back, and see how many of our friends and family we have left behind. Go back, bring them with you. It may slow you down, but remember life is a journey and not a race.
